The annual largest marathon event in Hong Kong—the Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon will be held on Sunday (January 21).

The annual Hong Kong Standard Chartered Marathon, the largest marathon in Hong Kong, will be held on Sunday (January 21). This year's marathon will fully return to its pre-pandemic scale, with the number of runners increased to 74,000. Whether for professional athletes, amateurs, or first-time marathon runners, completing a marathon often leads to a series of fatigue and discomfort in the body.

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that blood circulation is crucial for health. Especially when exercise causes injuries, it is essential to ensure that blood circulation in the injured area is not obstructed. Only in this way can energy be continuously supplied to the affected area, waste be eliminated, immunity be enhanced, and inflammation be prevented. Here are some traditional Chinese medicine health strategies that can help runners recover, reduce pain and fatigue, and prevent potential hidden dangers.

1. Rest and Relaxation

Give the body appropriate rest time to allow muscles and joints to recover, and relax the body and mind to reduce fatigue and stress. Traditional Chinese medicine especially recommends methods such as meditation, deep breathing, and body stretching.

2. Traditional Chinese Massage Therapy
Traditional Chinese massage therapy is an ancient and effective treatment method widely used in the rehabilitation of sports injuries and fatigue. Runners can seek help from professional traditional Chinese massage therapists to perform full-body or specific area massages, relieve muscle tension and fatigue, promote blood circulation, and help accelerate the recovery of the body's balance and function.

3. Acupoint Massage

Traditional Chinese acupoint massage can stimulate the body's meridians, promote the flow of qi and blood, and aid in recovery. Commonly used acupoints include Zusanli, Taichong, and the bladder meridian. Using essential oils and medicated plasters on joints and muscle areas that are prone to stress during long runs can help relax muscles and joints, providing comfort and relieving fatigue.

4. Hot and Cold Compresses

After running a marathon, hot or cold compresses can be used immediately to relieve muscle pain and inflammation. According to traditional Chinese medicine theory, hot compresses promote blood circulation and relax muscles, suitable for acute injuries; cold compresses can reduce pain and swelling, suitable for chronic injuries.

5. Herbal Remedies

If you unfortunately sprain or suffer other minor injuries during the marathon, you can use topical analgesics and medicated plasters containing Tibetan red medicine. The blood-activating and stasis-dispelling properties of Tibetan red medicine help promote blood circulation, reduce muscle fatigue, joint pain, and discomfort, and accelerate muscle recovery. Additionally, Tibetan red medicine products can also be used before and after the marathon. Using it before the run can prevent meridian blockage, enhance the body's vitality and flexibility, thereby reducing the risk of injury; using it after the run can help muscles recover, reduce fatigue and discomfort, allowing runners to return to normal physical condition more quickly.

6. Dietary Adjustment

Proper dietary adjustment is also key to recovery. Traditional Chinese medicine recommends consuming easily digestible foods, such as fresh vegetables, fruits, high-quality proteins (chicken, fish), and healthy fats (olive oil, nuts). At the same time, avoid excessive intake of processed foods, fried foods, and sugary drinks, as these foods are not conducive to recovery.

Moderate exercise and strength training should only be light training to give the body enough time to recover.

Traditional Chinese medicine health strategies can serve as auxiliary methods but do not replace medical treatment. I wish all runners success in the marathon, but health is the most important! Always pay attention to your physical condition before and after running.
