What is Sanfu Tian Jiu?

The Tian Jiu therapy plays an important role in traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture, with a long history and wide application. From ancient times to the present, Tian Jiu therapy has been widely used in the field of traditional Chinese medicine for the prevention and treatment of diseases. By stimulating specific acupoints and using stimulating medicinal substances, it can improve skin blood circulation, regulate organ functions, and unblock meridians to achieve therapeutic effects.

Tian Jiu therapy can be traced back to the Warring States period, and has been continuously explored and innovated by physicians from different eras, making its application more extensive and refined. From the Tang and Song dynasties to the Ming and Qing dynasties, the development of Tian Jiu therapy reached its peak, with a more diverse range of medicinal substances used and significant therapeutic effects.

The process and mechanism of action of Fu Tian Jiu

The main steps of undergoing Tian Jiu therapy involve applying warm medicinal substances to specific acupoints to treat various cold-related diseases, such as alleviating nasal allergy symptoms and improving menstrual irregularities. These acupoints are usually located on the back, abdomen, and limbs, and are selected based on the patient's constitution and disease condition. Commonly selected acupoints on the back include Ding Chuan, Fei Yu, Pi Yu, and Shen Yu, which are related to the respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems. Using medicinal plasters on these acupoints helps regulate their respective functions and achieve therapeutic effects.

Abdominal acupoints are also frequently chosen targets, such as Tian Shu, Qi Hai, and Guan Yuan, which can regulate spleen and stomach functions, promote the circulation of qi and blood, and have significant effects on digestive system issues and qi and blood deficiency. Additionally, acupoints like Zu San Li on the calf are also commonly used in traditional Chinese Tian Jiu therapy to adjust the circulation of qi and blood, positively impacting immune function and alleviating qi deficiency symptoms.

Indications and contraindications for Fu Tian Jiu

During Sanfu Tian Jiu, stimulating acupoints to regulate respiratory system functions has significant effects on alleviating symptoms such as nasal allergies, cough, or colds. At the same time, it also has effects on joint pain such as cervical spondylosis, shoulder pain, low back pain, knee pain, and rheumatic joint pain. Furthermore, Sanfu Tian Jiu can also improve issues such as bronchitis, dysmenorrhea, menstrual irregularities, cold-type stomach pain, indigestion, and diarrhea.

However, not everyone is suitable for undergoing Sanfu Tian Jiu therapy. In some cases, Tian Jiu should be avoided, such as in pregnant women to prevent adverse effects on the fetus; it should also be avoided if there are skin injuries or ulcers to prevent infection or worsening of wounds; and for infectious diseases such as fever or pneumonia, the therapy should be paused to avoid worsening the condition.

What is Sanfu Tian Jiu for treating winter diseases in summer?

"Treating winter diseases in summer" is a method aimed at preventing and regulating diseases that are prone to occur or worsen in winter. These diseases are usually related to the patient's constitution, which tends to be cold and deficient, such as bronchial issues and weak colds. Summer is regarded as the best time to treat winter diseases, utilizing the summer period to apply warm medicinal substances to specific acupoints, stimulating the body's vital energy, enhancing disease resistance, and preventing the recurrence of winter diseases or alleviating symptoms.

According to the principles in "Su Wen: Four Qi Regulation Theory," summer should focus on nurturing yang. During the hot summer, the skin relaxes and pores open, making it easier for medicinal substances to penetrate the skin, stimulate acupoints, promote the flow of yang energy, dispel cold pathogens, and enhance resistance, aiding recovery. This therapy not only alleviates symptoms but also boosts immunity and prevents disease recurrence.

When can Sanfu Tian Jiu be performed?

Fu Tian is an important period in traditional Chinese medicine, and treatment during this time has special effects. Sanfu Tian refers to the three periods of early Fu, mid Fu, and late Fu, which occur on the third, fourth, and the first day after the summer solstice. During this period, yang energy is strong, and the body's yang energy is relatively robust, thus enhancing the therapeutic effects. It is recommended to apply the therapy continuously three times throughout the entire period to form a complete treatment course. If one can persist in applying it for three years, it will further enhance the therapeutic effects, help replenish yang energy, strengthen the body's immunity, and reduce the likelihood of recurrence of old diseases in winter.
