Because Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) considers dampness to be one of the "four external evils," it is the root cause of the abnormal metabolism of body fluids and water. In TCM theory, wind, cold, dampness, and dryness are the four basic pathogenic factors that interact within the human body, leading to the occurrence of various diseases.
What is "heavy dampness"?
Because traditional Chinese medicine believes that dampness is one of the "four external evils", and dampness is the root cause of abnormal metabolism of body fluids and water. In traditional Chinese medicine theory: wind, cold, dampness, and dryness are four basic pathogenic factors that interact within the body, leading to various diseases. Specifically, it can lower the body's resistance, trigger colds, and clinically manifest as headaches, body aches, and limb tremors. It can inhibit normal metabolism, leading to cold symptoms clinically manifested as cold limbs, body chills, and drowsiness. It can obstruct the flow of Qi, leading to dampness symptoms clinically manifested as a heavy body, joint pain, and limb swelling, as well as clinical manifestations such as dry mouth, dry skin, and constipation.
Why should we prevent heavy dampness before illness?
In traditional Chinese medicine theory, the development of all diseases or pathological changes has its "process". During the "process" of onset, the body is influenced by the current environment and individual constitution. For example, what people commonly refer to as "heavy dampness" is a description of the body's pathological manifestations. These characteristics also reflect the warning signs before the body becomes ill. When dampness invades internally and becomes severe enough to show symptoms, the main manifestations are as follows.
1. Symptoms transition from exterior to interior
Initially manifested as fatigue, heavy head, light limbs, joint pain, etc. Subsequently, symptoms worsen and transform into internal dampness invasion.
2. Dampness invades the organs
Dampness can invade the spleen, liver, kidneys, and other organs.
Leading to poor spleen and stomach function, loss of appetite, and loose stools.
Damp-heat intermingling, internal heat and external cold clashing, resulting in symptoms such as bitter mouth, bad breath, and irritability.
3. Dampness and stasis obstructing
Dampness obstructs the circulation of Qi and blood in the body, causing lower abdominal distension and reduced urine output.
Evil disrupts the mind, leading to confusion and forgetfulness.
Why heavy dampness may be the last straw for illness?
To treat illness, one must seek to address the root cause. Dampness is one of the "four external evils", characterized by its heavy and turbid nature, easily influenced by environmental factors, accumulating and stagnating in the body over time. Preventing dampness from obstructing the metabolic circulation of body fluids can be approached from the surface to the interior, encompassing multiple levels such as the body surface, organs, meridians, skin, and blood vessels, manifesting different clinical symptoms. This reflects the extensive impact of dampness, so the medical sage Bian Que had already clearly indicated: diseases in the skin (muscle) can be treated with external methods; in the blood vessels, with precise methods; and in the stomach and intestines, with a combination of acupuncture, moxibustion, internal medicine, and external medicine.

Summary
The impact of dampness on the meridians
Traditional Chinese medicine believes that excessive dampness can obstruct the meridians, leading to impaired water metabolism and the pathological condition of internal dampness.
Internal accumulation of dampness can cause the meridians to lose their clarity and smoothness, affecting the normal circulation of body fluids, resulting in ineffective transport and metabolism of body fluids.
Meridian imbalance and water metabolism imbalance
When the function of the meridians is impaired and water metabolism is unbalanced, dampness will accumulate in the body, forming pathological products such as damp-heat and phlegm.
These pathological products will further obstruct the function of the meridians, creating a vicious cycle, ultimately leading to the inability of body fluids to circulate normally in the skin and tissues.
Meridian treatment
Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the human meridian system is an important channel for water and fluid circulation. The meridians consist of acupoints and channels, where the channels can be seen as the "liquid meridians" responsible for harmonizing and transporting various body fluids, including blood, lymph, and water. The smoothness of the meridians directly affects the metabolism and circulation of body fluids.
