[Children's Health/Traditional Chinese Medicine/Abdominal Pain] Abdominal pain in children is a common issue, but the underlying causes are often overlooked. Abdominal pain and diarrhea fall under the category of spleen and stomach in Traditional Chinese Medicine, which may be related to gastrointestinal function. Gastrointestinal diseases can be remedied later, but if postnatal malnutrition leads to abdominal pain and diarrhea, we need to identify the cause to prevent this malnutrition from becoming habitual and increasing the incidence of chronic gastrointestinal diseases. Since children often cannot clearly describe their condition, as parents, we need to observe their living habits and physical discomfort to avoid delaying treatment or increasing the risk of other gastrointestinal diseases.
"To treat a disease, one must seek to address its root cause"
The human body is a holistic metabolic system; food needs to be digested into small molecular substances in the digestive tract before it can be absorbed into the body. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that the spleen and stomach are the foundation of postnatal health, responsible for digesting and absorbing food and transporting nutrients to various organs and tissues throughout the body. If the digestive process is disrupted, it can not only affect nutrient absorption and normal development but also lead to various digestive system diseases. Therefore, we cannot overlook frequent abdominal pain and diarrhea, as they are warning signs from the body's digestive system. In addition to addressing the symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea in real-time, we must also identify the causes of these issues to maintain the healthy functioning of the digestive tract and prevent various related digestive system diseases.

Why should we be cautious about habitual diseases?
Children's spleen and stomach are relatively weak, and they are significantly affected by food and medication; therefore, it is essential to cultivate good eating and medication habits. Poor dietary habits, such as consuming cold fruits, raw foods, baked goods, snacks, carbonated drinks, and fried foods, can affect children's gastrointestinal health. Additionally, the mental stress of studying and sleep quality can also increase the incidence of abdominal pain and diarrhea. Therefore, we should pay attention to inspecting children's eating and medication habits, as well as their sleep quality and emotional state. This helps in the early detection of the causes of abdominal pain and avoids delays in treatment.
Common symptoms and treatment methods for diarrhea are as follows.

Home Care 123
1. First Aid for Abdominal Pain, Diarrhea, and Vomiting
Abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting are commonly associated with uncontrolled contractions of the gastrointestinal smooth muscles. We can use topical medicinal oils containing menthol, massage the abdomen for 1-2 minutes, and then apply a hot compress to relieve smooth muscle spasms and adjust gastrointestinal function. Generally, the symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting should improve within half an hour. If symptoms do not improve, pay attention to whether the child shows signs of dehydration, such as reduced urine output, dry and dull skin, or sunken eyes. If so, seek professional medical help.
2. Prevent Dehydration
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine's meridian theory, the lungs and large intestine are interconnected. Once diarrhea causes dehydration, it can affect the body's immune capacity and increase the risk of other diseases. For school-aged children with acute diarrhea, if symptoms persist for 6-12 hours, the risk of dehydration increases. Therefore, it is recommended to give the patient clear water or electrolyte drinks (for example, 1g of salt, 1 teaspoon of glucose, and 500cc of water) to replenish the fluids and electrolytes lost by the body.
3. Prevent Recurrence
The spleen and stomach are the foundation of postnatal health. Long-term recurrent abdominal pain and diarrhea reflect poor health of the spleen and stomach, such as poor appetite and weak digestion and absorption in the child. It is recommended that after diarrhea resolves, the spleen and stomach should be nourished to promote appetite and absorption. In terms of dietary therapy, ingredients such as Poria, white olives, yam, coix seed, lotus seeds, and lentils can be added to meat soup; additionally, moxibustion can be performed on the Sanyinjiao and Tianshu acupoints to strengthen the spleen and stimulate appetite.
